Week 5 question
I truly enjoyed reading about the special people in your lives that encouraged you to study English in the United States. For many of you, it was your parents assistance and insistence. I hope to be so supportive of my 2 sons when they want to venture abroad. Our next chapter is about "Passages of Life". How does your culture welcome new babies? In the United States, people send gifts and cards and come and visit the baby. Many people bring food for the family and offer to run errands or help take care of other siblings. The mom and dad can have some rest and some special time with the new baby.

In Viet Nam, after a month the baby born, the family hold the party to welcome the baby. They invite people around for the party. People often bring the presents when coming to the party. The common presents are golden ring, necklace, bracelet, and so on. In the party, mom brings the baby in the arm, and go to each table so that people can see the baby. Everyone wishes the best things for the baby as well. In short that is a happy day of the baby and everybody.
We don't have special party to welcome babys as soon as they were born.We just visit hospital to see baby and his mother. But we have a 100-day anniversary after a baby was born.On 100-day party we invite relatives and friends, and prepare a lot of food. Visiters bring a gold ring for baby. Also,we have a ceremony on this day. We put money, string, and penciles in front of baby. After that we gather people around a baby and let a baby pick up one thing.If he pick up money, it means he will be rich. The string means to live longer and peciles mean to be a scholar. The 100-day party is very big anniversary in Korea.
Since Bomin already said about almost of Korean baby celebrations, I feel I don't have to comment more. So, I'd like to write about traditional things. In the past, Korean mother usually give birth to a baby at home. After childbirth, they hang charcol for girl and red pepper for boy the outside of a house during 21 days. Charcol purify the air, and red pepper keep away harmful insects. Also, it takes a role of information for neighbor which tells childbirth and sex distinction. When there are hanging charcol or red pepper, people restrain from coming and going that house. So, a newborn baby can protected from germ infection by touching.
In Viet Nam, I don’t know how people welcome a baby. However, when my uncle’s son was born, my family had a party to welcome the baby. We have lot of present for the baby such as milk, clothes, etc. Some people give silver chain for the baby because they believe that silver made the baby has a good health. On this day, the whole family thought and made a decision for the name of the baby. The new baby is a new member in a family, furthermore he brings happy for the family.
In China, we do not have special party to welcome babies. We just go to hospital to see the baby and mother. But afer a month the baby born, we have a ceremony. This ceremony usually is in the restautant. The baby's family will invite their friends of relation. They will bring some gifts.
In Taiwan, it has many traditional customs actually when a newborn arrives our family, but the person seldom pays attention to this etiquette and customs on the nowadays. In the traditional, we will buy a gold necklace to hang on the body; we hope he/she will be able to be healthy, rich and smart. Now, we will present some practical gifts. For example, clothes, toys, or diapers and feeding bottles. Hoped he/she can grow up healthy. We would be very happy because of the bodies’ arrival and bring a new life and hope to the family.
After the new baby was born, there is a month of time starting from delivery of a baby or the period of the mother's rest. Relations or friends bring some tonics or cook something like sesame oil chicken to the mom, and visit the baby in passing. We also send "Red-eggs" to relations and friends when the baby was born about a month. It means share the joy with everyone.
Vietnamese welcome a new baby when he or she is a month old. Depend on that baby’s family; they make a small party from one to three tables, at noon or in the evening. Their guests are family members, relatives, their closed friends and some neighbors. They come to the party with their gifts. Grandparents and relatives of that baby, as usual, give him or her lucky money or gold jewelries, such as ring, bracelet, and necklace. The others give the baby clothes, milk, or lucky money with some sweet greeting. After greeting and giving presents, they enjoy the party. During the party, the parents of that baby hold him or her on their arms and go around the tables to take pictures with their guests. In short, making a full-month party is the way Vietnamese present their new babies to their friends memorably.
There is some traditional celebration to welcome new babies in Taiwan. Most family will have festivities after one month the baby arrived. They may have a party at home or in the restaurant, and they’ll invite their relatives, neighbors, and friends to join it. All people come to the party will bring gifts for the parents and their baby. During the party, some family will cut baby’s hair. It means after that the baby will grow up healthily. According to our traditions, the family will return the sticky rice and red eggs to the guests if the baby is a boy. In contrast, they’ll give guests a box of cake if the baby is a girl. Then another big day for the babies is the first birthday. The parents usually celebrate it with their family and some closely friends. They will prepare a basket with some different stuff, such as a pen, a ruler, a calculator, a stethoscope, a coin…etc. They make the baby pick one and guess what job their child will have in the future. In short, the purpose of all these custom is to bless the family and their new baby and wish they have a wonderful life.
In Korea, Bomin and stella wrote about new baby ceremony, I will write about 100 day ceremony. Long time ago, medical treatment level was low and many babies were dead before birth 100 days. Babies become healthy and immune as show other people. People come home and bless new baby. Parents treat some food and special rice cakes. One is red rice cake other one is white rice cake. Red means to expel bad sprits. White means pure and grow up to be healthy.
Many korean students talk about same things, so I will explain about a woman delivered of a child mother. when a woman gave bitrh to a child, they used to eat a brown seaweed soup.After a childbirth, woman usually lost their health. It means that they were tired about a delivery. So,the seeweed soup have a recovery function that they can get back their health more presto.So, I think that It muse be relly important for woman. After that we cellerbated their new baby like a 100-day anniversery.
\In Taiwan, we have several ways to welcome baby. For example, we prepared a gift to send our relationships and friends. There are included egg, rice and cake in the gift. Then we send it by ourselves, and we tell them we have a baby. The baby’s mom has few days with the baby, but the baby’s dad does not have more time with the baby. Some companies do not allow the baby’s parents rest. Therefore, most babies are taken by their grandparents. When after month, we prepare food and invite relationships and friends to eat. We welcome baby’s complete of her or him first month of life.
Actually, i didn't know about the welcoming baby in Korea, so i called to my younger brother because my niece was born 2weeks ago and then I asked to my brother how did you welcome baby. He said to me so many people came to his house with gifts and brown seaweed. The brown seaweed is really popular food for women after they delivered of a child. My brother said there's no special party for baby. I think new baby in our family that is the best pleasure because new baby is always make us happy.
Korean doesn't have special party to welcome baby.But we have a 100day. Many Korean know to important 100day before,however new some Korean people are not important 100day,because they use many a lot of money in 100day. So now some people may do smell party in their home,and thay take a picture. They give to love their baby with kiss.
